Explanations of versions and updates

Pierson Software uses a versioning system that consists of a Major number, Minor number and a Revision number. An example version number would be 1.2.3 where '1' is the major number, '2' is the minor number and '3' is the revision number.

Major Updates

A major update is typically a "major" overhaul of the application that could include a complete rewrite, support for a new operating system or new features. These changes would be a substantial change to the product where a new version number would be required.

Minor Updates

Minor updates are "minor" changes and/or additions to the application. Minor updates could be user change requests or refinement of current features. These changes would enhance the current product and would require a new minor version number but would not necessitate a new major version number.

Revision Updates

Revision updates are almost always bug fixes. Bugs are unexpected failures that generally propagate when a user uses the software in an unforeseen manner or just simply an oversight on the developers part. The revision number is incremented to reflect the new build.
